Turn last-minute trips into lasting memories.

August 21, 2020

Make the final days of summer count.

Since August is already winding down, that means there isn’t much time left in the season. There’s no better way to get the last bit out of summer than to take your American Coach on an impromptu trip. Here are some suggestions to make it a success.

Load up.
You probably won’t have much time to do all of your regular preparations for this getaway. So because you don’t know exactly what’s in store, be prepared for anything by taking advantage of the extra space your motor coach offers. You’ll be happy you packed your golf clubs if you see a good looking course. Bring a change of clothes in case you find a nice restaurant (you never know!). And of course, stock the kitchen with everyone’s favorite snacks and drinks.

Be spontaneous.
Last-minute adventures demand a different kind of mindset. View this as an exercise in improvising. Be open to whatever comes your way. As you’re driving, look for things that seem interesting. If a billboard advertises something that sounds unique, take that exit and check it out! Notice a beautiful field of flowers? Pull over and take a photo. Let the journey dictate the itinerary.

Take your pet with you.
Because you didn’t have much time to plan, there may not be any open kennel space and it may be too late to ask someone to watch your dog. Don’t let that stop you! The great thing about having a motor coach means you have the room to bring your four-legged friend along. Just remember to pack the food, toys and leash.

Ask a local.
Let a native be your concierge! When you get to your destination, turn to people that live there for suggestions. Sometimes, it’s amazing the gems you’ll find when you ask someone, “What’s your favorite thing to do here?” or “What’s something you’ve always wanted to do in your hometown, but never have?” You’ll probably see a side of the area that can’t be found in a tour book.

Let tech help you.
Technology can be a lifesaver during last-minute trips. GPS will not only guide you to your destination, but will also give you real-time updates so you don’t get stuck in traffic. Apps like Gas Buddy help you find stations and compare fuel costs. You can even make reservations to most restaurants and attractions online.
