Three Notable Irish Destinations in the USA

March 7, 2022

With St. Patrick’s Day just around the corner and plenty of parades and parties wherever you may be, we wanted to share three family-friendly Irish-centric destinations here in the U.S. worth a visit when there isn’t a massive holiday crowd to contend with.

The Tenement Museum
New York City’s Lower East Side
In a city full of wonderful Irish American tourist destinations (like St. Peter’s Church and McSorley’s Old Ale House, to name a few), New York’s Tenement Museum is an incredible way to experience what life was like for the many immigrant communities that came to this country hundreds of years before we even existed. Their “At Home in 1869” tour (weekends only) takes you through the recreated living space of an Irish immigrant family, and shares how they maintained their Irish identity despite facing enormous discrimination at the time.

Boston Irish Heritage Trail
Boston, MA
When we talk about the Irish in America, Boston is one of the first cities we think of. History shows the Irish arriving as far back as the mid-1600s, and according to modern Census data, Irish Americans are one of if not the biggest ethnic groups in the city today. The fantastic Boston Irish Heritage Trail honors that history and the city that sprung from it, putting you on a walking path that includes noteworthy sites, statues of historic figures, and more.

Milwaukee’s Irish Fest
August 18-21, 2022
Milwaukee, WI

Milwaukee’s Irish Fest claims to be the world’s largest celebration of Irish culture, and having been there many times, we’re inclined to believe them. It’s MASSIVE, covering much of Milwaukee’s acclaimed Summerfest grounds (which sits right on Lake Michigan, making every view breathtaking), and according to Wikipedia “over 130,000 people attend the Fest each year to take in nearly 250 acts on 17 stages.” In addition to local and traveling musical acts and Irish Dance troupes, Irish Fest also features celebrations of Irish sport, authentic Irish Cuisine, and a 5k Run/Walk!
