Visit the city where the Continental Congress declared independence
If you’re looking for a little history with your 4th of July celebration, you should start with a trip to Philadelphia, PA. That’s where delegates from the original 13 colonies declared America’s independence from British rule, and where you can now tour many of the historic sites and landmarks connected to our declaration of independence, including Carpenters’ Hall (where the first Continental Congress met) and Declaration Hall (where Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence). Plus, there’s always plenty to do in Philly.

See the actual Declaration of Independence
Why not celebrate America’s independence by reading the actual declaration of it? The National Archives in Washington D.C. is home to the original Declaration of Independence document, as well as other pivotal historical documents that shaped our nation. You’ll want to reserve tickets early, as it’s only open for a limited time each day. But your ticket gets in you into the rotunda as well as the connected galleries and vaults to explore an endless collection of relevant, historic documents.
